Issue: Impeachment

You don't have to be a Trump supporter to consider what's going on to be a "political circus". That Trump is innocent or the Democrats are virtuously defending the rule of law are not the only possibilities. In fact, I would say the evidence is very strong that neither is the case.

Trump very likely broke some law, in the case that the Democrats have chosen for their impeachment action. But so what else is new? There are so many laws, especially relating to business and government officials, that it would be hard for anybody operating in that environment to avoid breaking at least one. And it was clear that the Democrats have been looking for some grounds for impeachment since before Trump even took office. They said they were going to do it, and they've been trying for three years, one thing after another, and they finally found something that might stick. What an accomplishment!

That's not to say Trump didn't break a law, or even that he didn't do something "wrong" in terms of ethics. But the Democrats are hardly innocent in this respect. Note how in both of the main areas where the Democrats got the furthest in their investigation/prosecution of Trump's "crimes", what he did was actually responding to / enabled by something that prominent Democrats did – in this case, by involvement of the Bidens in weird dealings with the very same country.

Trump is a clown – some people hate him for that, some people love him for it. Trump has also pushed a lot of destructive policies. (He's done a few good things too, but that's not a good reason to support him – "even a stopped clock...", as they say.) But the Democrats are also pushing for a lot of destructive policies. And they have proven themselves over the generations to be as corrupt, on average, as Republicans, when they get the chance.

So sure, let's see Trump impeached. It will keep both him and the Democrats busy for a while. And if they succeed in driving him out of office on the basis of this "crime", I hope to see the same standard applied to every future president, to every future member of Congress, and to every current member of Congress, both Democrat and Republican. If it were, I'd guess 2/3 of them would be gone.
