About the Libertarian Party

The Libertarian Party was founded in 1971 and has run candidates for President and Vice President every four years since 1972. It has affiliates in all fifty states, and LP members regularly run for public office at all levels, from local district board to Governor and from city council to US Senate.
The LP is distinguished by having a consistent Statement of Principles that was established in the very early days of its existence, and has not changed since. The LP also has a detailed Platform that covers a large number of issues in more depth, but which is consistent with the basic principles.
